You safely arrive and are warmly welcomed at the
Captain Isaac Merrill Inn.
You’re
checked into your room by the spirited great, grand-daughter of
The Captain. (She took 2 years to get around
the world a very long time ago, and is now very happy to be in
this house and in this town.)
Immediately you’re taken aback - into a bygone era. You
gasp in pleasant surprise to have found such a jewel of a place.
Once settling into this sea captain’s house, you relish
the idea of something to eat after your long ride. You’re
hungry, and you find there’s several wonderful restaurants in
this quaint, antique, colonial village, serving fresh produce
grown in local gardens, with selections from the sea so near, on
this gentle
coast, and from the fields inland.
After a sound sleep, you awake refreshed! You can’t wait
to be outside in the fresh air ! You walk to beautiful
Blue Hill Bay,
just 2 blocks from the front door. You stand on the Town Warf,
behind the Firehouse, looking at the beautiful tranquil view
from the Head of the Bay, or you stand on the little bridge, and
watch the mallard ducks having their breakfast.
A full breakfast is waiting for you, including a deluxe
continental buffet. Maybe you’ll decide to have blueberry
pancakes this morning…. Or eggs benedict…..
After breakfast, you can stroll to the
Town Park on the Bay,
and take in the breathtaking view of all sorts of boats in the
sheltered harbor, with the mts. of Acadia Nat’l Park behind
them, 20 miles away.
On your walk back, you’ll pass 3 art galleries, gift
shops and famous Rowentree's Pottery.
When you’re ready for some seriously
stunning
scenery, of mountains & islands rising from the waters of Blue
Hill Bay, you can hike Blue Hill to the top for a great
workout, or through the blueberry & lupin field – the easy
route, to see what the first settlers saw……. Majestic, supreme
peacefulness: Mountains, sky, water, islands in the Bay.
You can drive to Bar Harbor, for a day in
Acadia National Park,
or take an ocean tour of
Stonington
on a real
Lobster Boat.
Or visit
Castine,
home of
Maine Maritime Academy,
and take a tour of their training vessel
The State of Maine. You’ll
meander through distinctly individual, quaint, tiny villages
built long ago, and still inhabited. And find artists
studios in the woods. And views of tidal waters around the
next bend.
Maine’s
DOWNEAST Acadia Region
awaits you…. Can’t you hear it calling … ?
